Focusing on personal stories and experiences told by women, #ustoo serves to document the normalization and prevalence of the sexual harassment, assault, and abuse of women in today’s society. Pairing survivors’ stories with photographs, the first section within the project, Places, documents the locations where women were sexually harassed, assaulted, and/or abused. What Were You Wearing?, the second group of images, documents women wearing clothing that they were sexually harassed, assaulted, or abused in. Weapons, the final series of images within #ustoo, depicts the weapons women carry and self-defense mechanisms that they take part in, due to fear of assault.
Ana Pearse received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography and a minor in art history from Oregon State University in 2021. Their bodies of work include #ustoo and 219 Cotton Swabs. Selected pieces from #ustoo and the 219 Cotton Swabs installation have been chosen for a number of solo and group exhibitions in the past year, including shows held at the Oregon State University Fairbanks Gallery, Umpqua Valley Arts Hallie Brown Ford Gallery, The Arts Center Corrine Woodman Gallery, and Blackfish Gallery in Portland, OR.
Pearse was selected to be a recipient of the URSA Grant at Oregon State University for their ongoing documentary project #ustoo and was recently named one of “Corvallis’ Most Impactful People of 2021” by The Corvallis Advocate, as an advocate for fellow survivors of sexual assault. After taking two gap years, Pearse plans on pursuing their double master’s degree in photography and contemporary art history.
